  • The Harris-Benedict Equation: One of the earliest formulas developed to calculate Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)—the energy your body burns at rest. It was updated in 1984 to improve precision and remained the gold standard until 1990.

  • The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation: Introduced in 1990, this formula quickly superseded Harris-Benedict. Extensive testing has shown it provides a significantly more accurate estimation of standard BMR for the general population.

  • The Katch-McArdle Formula: Rather than just looking at height, weight, age, and gender, this formula calculates Resting Daily Energy Expenditure (RDEE) by factoring in lean body mass. Because it accounts for muscle versus fat tissue, it is often the most accurate choice for leaner individuals who already know their precise body fat percentage.

Which one is best? While the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is widely considered the most reliable all-around option for calculating BMR, the Katch-McArdle formula is superior if you have accurate body composition data.

BMR = 10W + 6.25H - 5A + 5

Revised Harris-Benedict Equation:

BMR = 13.397W + 4.799H - 5.677A + 88.362

Katch-McArdle Formula:
BMR = 370 + 21.6(1 - F)W
